Book Description

HERMAN MELVILLE The Confidence Man. Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans and Roberts, 1857. 1st. U.K. Edition. Original orange cloth, a little soiled with an ink spot on the spine. The end papers are stuck to the pastedowns and there is a small owner’s stamp on the contents page. The Confidence Man by Herman Melville was his final novel, published on April Fool’s Day 1857. This is not the American edition with a cancel title leaf but an entirely new setting of type. Nathaniel Hawthorne made arrangements for this first English publication on Melville’s behalf. Possibly issued simultaneously with the U S edition. Rare.
