THE CASTLE SPECTRE A Drama in five Acts First Performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on Thursday December 14th 1797 First Edition 1798 Published in London for J. Bell in 1798 this is the First Edition of this Gothic Horror Play by Lewis, a Ghost story set in Conway, Wales the paper the book is printed on carries a 1797 watermark the book has been rebound in cloth with marbled paper covered boards, just under 8.5 inches tall, vi-103 pages plus publishers advert leaf, book bears the bookplate of its previous owner, Sir Nicholas Wall Q.C. who was one of England’s leading Judges before his death, he was a noted antiquarian book collector, and a keen bookbinder, it’s very likely that this book was rebound by him. Apart from minor marks the binding is in very good general condition, internally the title page is soiled with neat archival tape repairs to both leading and inner edges, the first page of the prologue (pictured) has some soiling to leading edge and an archival tape repair to the inner edge, noticeable browning and foxing to a number of pages within, along with the occasional handling marks, else contents in good acceptable condition, noticeable soiling to rear publishers advert leaf and inner tape repair A GENERALLY GOOD ACCEPTABLE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE FIRST EDITION
