Book Description
CALAGES, Jacob. Manuscript Jesuitical College notes on the Art of Rhetoric/ Speaking. “ Ars Oratoria Tradita” Rhetorica Jacobi Calages carmanensis et in collegio Tolsano Soc Jesu Rhetoris. Anno 1707. Blank book bound in contemporary full calf, spine in seven compartments, gilt, with original label “RHE.TOR”. Corners lightly bumped, some chips to gilt on spine, internally perfectly original, the pages framed in ruled red ink. Pp 112 in manuscript including 6p index, and several prelims. Approx 17cm x 12 cm. The manuscript is in a very readable, but not tidy hand. Interestingly, there are three printed plates bound in to the book ( not, I think tipped in) which makes me think that this might have been a book issued to students at the collegio Tolsano [Toulouse] . The plate used as a frontis has heads of philosophers around a blank central panel, with “ Chez Bonnart au coq” ( Bonnart at the Cock) printed at the bottom, and the two other plates have French titles; a crucifixion and a plate of St Cecile playing at a keyboard instrument. The work is divided into many short sections, starting with “ Ars Oratoria” and including “ “De Laude Dei”, “ De Laude Corporis”,” De Genere Judiciali”,”De Partium Enumeratione”, “ De Causis” and many more. An interesting insight into French Jesuitical teaching in a completely original contemporary manuscript book.
