Undated as issued, published in 1894 by Edward Arnold, this is the First Edition of this Very Rare early Science Fiction novel from E D Fawcett, author of two other Victorian Sci-Fi novels “Hartmann the Anarchist” and “The Secret of the Desert”, while holidaying near Vesuvius, Naples Italy, the hero of the story hears reports of Disastrous Earthquakes in Sicily and Calabria, with total destruction of Messina & Reggio, his Uncle, a Geologist and specialist in Earthquakes along with a Dr Ruggieri from the Observatory of Vesuvius head out to investigate the damage and get caught up in a further Earthquake being literally swallowed into the earth as a fissure opens up underneath them, the plunge into a Lost World populated by Dinosaurs and prehistoric vegetation, so begins the adventure…. Figured in Belier “Fantastic Literature” and Locke “Spectrum of Fantasy”, book is bound in bevelled edged pictorial cloth titled in silver internally Illustrated with six full page plates, by at least three different artists, 235 pages , there is some discolouration to cloth on top corner of upper board with some colour bleed to front endpapers (see pictures) mild marking to cloth, old bookplate to front pastedown, light marks to half title, a few minor marks within else in good general condition
