Presentation signature of author to Edward Carpenter on second free endpaper. Decorated by publisher’s device on title page. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt. Extremities worn, especially at head and tail of spine, but recased preserving the original binding. Pages browned but otherwise a very good copy.

This first edition is dedicated to Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) of Sheffield (from 1875 until after the end of the First World War) socialist writer, advocate of sexual freedom and gay rights and author of Civilisation: Its Cause and Cure (1889).
