Book Description

Comprising: 1) A letter from J W W Ladbrooke & Son, Shipping Agents of Norwich, confirming a Mrs Pillow's cruise booking; 2) 'Important Information for Passengers Booked for Lancastria Cruises 1934'; 3)' Sightseeing Arrangements 'Lancastria Cruises' 1934'; 4) 'Topics of the Hour' Nos 1 to 4 (full set); 5) 'Programme of Events' August 4th to 10th 1934; 6) 'Today's Programme of Events' (August 6th x 2, August 7th x 2, August 8th x 2); 7) 'Race Card' (August 6th x 2, August 8th & August 9th); 8) 3 telegrams to Mrs Pillow and their envelopes; 9) 3 not wanted on voyage tickets; 10) Menu for 'Dinner au Revoir' August 9th; all in a light blue textured paper folder with postcard of S.S. Laurentic tipped on. In generally good condition, the folder somewhat dog eared and browned. The Lancastria was originally scheduled for the cruise but was unable to sail and so the Laurentic took her place. The 'Topics of the Hour' was the onboard newspaper and it records that in the Fancy Costume Night Mrs Pillow's Mae West won the Ladies' Best Costume prize. Indeed one of the departure telegrams is addressed to Mae West so Mrs Pillow obviously went well prepared!
Dealer Notes
The S.S. Laurentic was launched in 1927 and plied the Liverpool to New York route until early 1934 when she was assigned to cruising until late 1935 when she was laid up in Liverpool. She was requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1939 and was lost in enemy action in November 1940 with the loss of 49 lives.
