Book Description

A fine, as new elusive set of the ultimate Castle Hill Press, 1922 edition of "Seven Pillars" in fine slipcase. Two splendid volumes + 2 coloured maps; the full goatskin edition number 58 of just 80 copies, (only 80 of the 752 sets were issued thus with additional material); aeg. The text volumes are superbly bound in glorious full dark blue goatskin by The Fine Bindery, featuring raised bands and rounded corners, hand-marbled endpapers by Ann Muir framed by gilt dentelles, blue and white head and tail bands, marbled endpapers. Housed in the oatmeal cloth slipcase with leather title label to rear of slipcase, which is also in fine, new condition. These 80 hand-numbered copies are supplied with a separate volume of beautifully reproduced illustrations from the 1926 "Subscribers’ Edition" of Seven Pillars and the Introductory material. Bound in original quarter morocco, together with a portfolio of loose, numbered proof illustrations as the 1926 edition, (each protected by 'Japanese' paper guards) and the two loose folding maps. Four volumes in all. The 'best text' edited by Jeremy Wilson from the manuscript and Lawrence's corrected copy of the Oxford Times proof printing. Vol. I: Introduction and Books I-V, 456 pages. Vol. II: Books VI-X, editorial notes, 456 pages. Typeset by Castle Hill Press in Caslon, Lawrence's preferred typeface. Printed by Cambridge University Press on 80g.s.m. Supreme Bookwove, a high-quality acid-free off-white book paper, with marbled endpapers. "If Seven Pillars interests you as history, or travel literature or autobiography, read the Oxford text. It's a third longer than the subscribers' abridgement (and the 1935 trade edition) contains all kinds of interesting things you won't find there" Jeremy Wilson, T.E. Lawrence's authorised biographer.
