Dealer Notes
First American edition. Siegfried Sassoon’s Rhymed Ruminations first appeared as a limited edition of 75 copies privately printed for the author and Geoffrey Keynes in 1939, which comprised 33 poems, and the collection was enlarged by the addition of nine new poems for the first trade edition, which was published in 1940 by Faber and Faber at London in an edition of 2,500 copies. This first published edition received mixed reviews, but, despite the critical belief that modern poetry had overtaken Sassoon, in January 1941 he was able to tell Glen Byam Shaw that ‘Rhymed Ruminations had sold 2,000 [copies] in spite of all the nasty reviews’ (M. Egremont, Siegfried Sassoon: A Biography (London, 2005), pp. 423).

The present, first American edition, was published by Viking on 28 February 1941 in an edition of 1,000 copies. Although not marked as such, this copy is from the library of Siegfried Sassoon (who was probably sent it by the publisher in fulfilment of contractual obligations), and it was inherited by his son George Sassoon. George had been born in 1936, during the period when the poems collected here were written, and he was the subject of a number of poems in Rhymed Ruminations, including ‘Meeting and Parting’, ‘To My Son’, and ‘The Child at the Window’.
