Sergei Iosifovich Yutkevich (1904-1985) was a leading Soviet film director and screenwriter. Revered by Russia's ruling Politburo, leaders of the motion-picture industry, and civilians alike. After earning his fame in the 1930's, he won two Stalin Prizes in the 1940's. He was bestowed the honourary title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1962, and on his 70th birthday, in 1974, he was honoured with the title of Hero of Socialist Labor, which is the Soviet Union's highest civilian award. Yutkevich was also a notable film historian, teaching at the Moscow Institute of Cinematography, where he was given the rank of professor in 1940. He earned a doctoral degree in the history of art in 1941. The present volume is a scarce example of his interest and works in the history of theatre and film, presenting a seldom seen examination of the Chinese theatrical arts.
