Dealer Notes
First edition of this valuable text by Jules Janin, published shortly after the death of Rachel ((Elisabeth Rachel Félix 1821-1858), the Jewish actress more than any other responsible for the classical style of acting. This is an early photo illustrated book. The photos by Henri de la Blanchère, who published L'Art du Photographe the same year, are posed photographs of Rachel in her various roles, following what was already an established market in photographs of actresses. Despite the splendid (and durable) original binding, the book is most often seen rebound.
