Book Description

BELT UP FOR THE CHIMPS TEA PARTY! SIDEY, Arthur REED, Freddie DOIDGE, John and others Chimpanzees at Twycross Zoo. Daily Mirror and Daily Mail, 1965 - 1983. A series of 41 fine large press photographs of the famous Twycross Zoo chimps. 18 by Arthur Sidey, 7 by Freddie Reed, 5 by John Doidge and 11 others, most bearing the Daily Mirror or Daily Mail stamp to the back, some with pasted captions to the back. The earlier John Doidge photographs are c. 205 x 295 mm. the later images mostly 355 x 275 mm. or a little smaller. Twycross Zoo was founded in 1963 by Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans; Molly trained the chimpanzees who appeared in the long running P.G. Tips adverts from the 1960s to the 1980s. She is the only human to appear in this remarkable collection of photographs, seen in an image taken in January 1983 showing her and Louis the chimp setting an example and belting-up in the front seat of her car to publicise the new law on the compulsory wearing of seat belts. Many of these photographs show the chimps dressed in clothing, or displaying human activities like Christmas, Valentine’s Day, blowing bubbles through a pipe; the earlier sequence from the 1960s are probably stills from the P.G. Tips adverts.
