Second edition, two volumes, 8vo. 14 plates - 5 coloured, plus 4 folding maps and a plan, contemporary owner's inscription to the fly leaves. Original gilt titled dark blue cloth, boards decorated in black, some very mild rubbing to extremities, an excellent set. Intending initially to cross Arabia, Burton disguised himself as a Dervish and travelled to Medina from Cairo, diverting eventually to Mecca due to tribal conflict.
