Hardback. li,298pp. Introduction by Austin Dobson contextualising the real Peg Woffington in eighteenth century theatre and the original publication of the novel in the mid-Victorian period. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. Novel based on the author’s successful play Masks and Faces in which the real life Irish actress Peg Woffington (1720-1760) was a major character and which was in turn made into a number of films including the 1935 Peg of Old Drury staring Anna Neagle. Green cloth with gilt pattern of butterflies and theatrical swags and cherubs to front and spine. cloth has some uneven mottling, more visible to the back board. Spine is slightly duller than the front. Lightly rubbed. Tissue guard for the frontis is detached but present. Very clean and sound.
