Venice, Evanelista Deuchino, 1625, title with woodcut device, dedication dated 1624. Pp [iv], 418, [ xxvi table of contents not numbered]. Some rather erratic pagination, but catchwords follow as they should. With 88 text engravings after Bolognino Zaltieri. There is a manuscript note fixed to verso of front pastedown with further owner inscription of J. H. Barrow dated 1822 at front, and with his bookplate . A full vellum binding with worn title label to the spine, small 4to. Some toning to pages, ffep lacks one corner, some thumbing, plates generally well struck. Complete. A strange work with memorable emblematic imagery, and a pleasing copy.
First published in Venice in 1556 as Le Imagini con la Spositione de i Dei de gli Antichi, with the first illustrated edition in 1571. The woodcuts are based on those of Bolognino Zalteri as printed in the Venice 1571 edition. The work is recognised as being a source book for Renaissance artists and was popular in its time, with Zaltieri’s lively and strange illustrations of the supposed iconography of the Gods. Cartari. was born in Reggio Emilia around 1531 and died around 1571and was probably in the court of the dukes of Ferrara. * Now reduced price of £700 from £895
