Regretfully, due to Covid-19, we have decided to cancel our fairs up until the end of December.  However, at this stage, we cannot confirm if our London Christmas Fair will take place but we will keep you updated.
Book Description
The First UK printing published by G. Bell & Sons, London in 1934. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. A slight lean with mild pushing at the spine ends. A little dustiness to the board's extreme edges with a very small mark to the upper front edge. Light toning and spotting to the text-block but internally clean with just a little offsetting to the end-papers. Free from inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light edge-wear-wear with toning to the spine and the folds. A slither of loss at the lower spine tip with light rubbing at the upper spine end. The striking wrapper artwork is unattributed but is reminiscent of the style of E. McKnight Kauffer. The wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. This is the first appearance in print of Greene's contribution of a short story 'A Day Saved' which was 'broadcast on BBC radio that year : the reader was Harcourt Williams who later played the lawyer Prewitt in the 1947 film 'Brighton Rock'. The story was included in 'The Basement Room and other Stories' in the following year, and in subsequent short story collections' (The works of Graham Greene : A reader's bibliography and guide -Jon Wise and Mike Hill). Other contributors include Peter Fleming, Walter de la Mare, L.P. Hartley, Winifred Holtby, Richard Hughes, Dorothy L. Sayers, Sylvia Townsend Warner, G.D.H. and M. Cole et al. It is highly likely that all the stories were especially written to be broadcast on the radio and this is their first appearance in print in this compilation volume. Many were subsequently reprinted in various short story compilations. A very scarce title with the wrapper, with only one copy located (without a wrapper) at auction in the last 20 years.
