Book Description
Octavo, pp. [8 (preliminaries)], 147, [1 (blank)]. Original printed light-blue wrappers. (A few light marks and some light rubbing on the lower edges of wrappers).

First edition, proof copy. A scarce proof copy of Amis’ ninth novel, which saw a move from his more conventionally literary novels to the thriller — a transition which proved divisive amongst the British critics. Night Train is a typically distinctive variation on the American noir thriller tradition, through which the leitmotif of variations musical, metaphorical and physical on the jazz standard ‘Night Train’ runs.

The first edition is paginated 1-149, while this proof copy is paginated 1-147 (due to resetting of the text), and some minor changes were made for the first edition. The half-title of the proof bears a statement that it is an uncorrected proof, which was removed for the first edition, and — like all proof copies — the proof is much rarer than the first edition of this title.
