Book Description

Folio. First edition. Original illustrated paper boards. Printed by W. S. Cowell, Ltd. Illustrated by the author with colour lithographs. Text hand-written by the author in a cursive script (with ‘medecine’ at the top of page 5). Short split to the head of the spine, with small loss. Boards clean and fresh. Bookplate of Andrew Murray to the flyleaf and a pencil presentation dated ‘Xmas 1947’. Endpapers and d/w flaps lightly foxed. A couple of finger marks to the margins. Unclipped d/w, priced ‘9s. net’, is rubbed and dust-soiled, with several short closed tears and a long crease from the bottom edge of the front panel. Tape has been applied to the verso along the edges and behind the crease. Very good + in good + d/w.
Dealer Notes
The “spirited and amusing pictures [..] have been drawn directly on the stone by the famous artist who is perhaps best known to children by his ‘Captain Grimes and Lucy’”. Eyre & Spottiswoode have mangled ‘Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain’ and ‘Lucy Brown and Mr. Grimes’, both published by Oxford University Press, and did not correct the author’s spelling of medicine. Brian Alderson’s Edward Ardizzone - A Bibliographic Commentary insists that the book was published in November 1948, but the pencil inscription in this copy is evidence that those who date it to 1947 are correct.
