Book Description

Original limp vellum, title and author in gilt to spine, silk ties. Spine slightly darkened, internally a few pages with slight toning and light spotting, but generally quite bright and clean. Bookplate of previous owner to front pastedown (Joseph Silkin 1904-1990, lawyer). Printed in black and red. One of three hundred copies on paper, with ten on vellum, only actually issued in March 1893 when the frontispiece of the Old Manor House at Kelmscott by C.M. Gere was completed. The first Kelmscott Press edition, and the twelfth book issued by the press, it is arguably the best of Morris's literary works. 'News From Nowhere' was originally serialized in the Socialist League's newspaper 'Commonweal' in 1890. Tomkinson 12; Peterson 12; LeMire A-50.05.
