Dealer Notes
The dedication copy. The presentation is to John Rayner, ‘whom, was not it likely to invite misrepresentation (such is the sad result of literary research) I should like to, and could properly, describe as the ‘onlie begetter’ or at least the original. Osbert.’ William John Rayner (1908-90), Features Editor of the Daily Express, had commissioned the first drawings and named them ‘pocket cartoons’. Roughly 10,000 Lancaster cartoons flowed from his pen during his lifetime and a tradition was established in English newspapers which continues today with the celebrated work of ‘Matt’ in the Daily Telegraph. A journalistic milestone and a charming token of a friendship.
Author Lancaster, Osbert
