8vo. 6 x 9 inches. xii + 568 pp. + 32 pp. publisher’s catalogue. Illustrated by map and tables in text. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with blind stamped decoration. Fore edge deckled. Some wear to extremities, including spine, which is sunned with small chip at head and light foxing of preliminaries; otherwise a very good clean copy. 1855 inscription on first free endpaper.

An account of India before the events of 1857-58 and the changes they brought about. It describes the development of government and the present state of administration, law, revenue and finance, with some reference to Indian social life and customs. Sir George Campbell (1824-92) was a Scottish colonial administrator, who was Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, 1870-74, and later became an MP. The first edition was published 1852.
