Book Description

[NAVY] WALSH (Ian) Marines training in Bahrain. Four b/w silver- gelatin prints. 92 x 120mm, Very good condition overall. Bahrain, 1961-62.
Dealer Notes
Four interesting photos of a training exercise of the royal marines in Bahrain. The exercise involved the storming of the beach from two landing ships and was a demonstration to a group of local sheikhs and dignitaries.

As well as the shown image, the next shows the reverse view for this group, giving their view of the exercise. The next image captures a navy commander meeting a local sheikh and the final photo is of H.M.S Bulwark taken from a supporting Navy vessel. Mitigating the ship’s crew taking photos accidentally showing confidential information, these images were taken by official navy photographers and then given to the crew as mementos of their tour of duty.

H.M.S Bulwark was launched as an aircraft carrier in 1948. From 1958, it was re-commissioned as a commando carrier and assigned to the 42 Commando Royal Marines and 848 squadron. It was sent to the Persian Gulf to assist in mitigating the threat of invasion from neighbouring Iraq.
