Book Description
TWAIN, Mark. Life on the Mississippi. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, in the original deluxe binding. The first state has the illustration of Twain's head and urn in flames at page 441 and the St. Louis caption on p. 443. Twain’s wife had objected that the illustration, which came at the end of a chapter on cremation, was morbid. In the second state the illustration is lacking. A very good clean copy in the original publisher's half calf, spine gilt-tooled in compartments with morocco title labels, marbled boards, edges, and end-papers. No names or inscriptions. 8vo. Boston: James R. Osgood, 1883.
Author TWAIN, Mark.
Date 1883
