Dealer Notes
Mary Raleigh Richardson (1882/3-1961) was a Canadian suffragette, socialist and later fascist (serving as organising secretary of the British Union of Fascists women's section), active in Britain. She undertook militant action in the struggle for suffrage, most famously attacking the Rokeby Venus to draw attention to the plight of Emmeline Pankhurst, who was then on hunger strike in Holloway prison, declaiming: "You can get another picture but you cannot get a life, as they are killing Mrs Pankhurst" (ODNB). Many museums subsequently closed their doors to unaccompanied women. Richardson served 18 months hard labour and was one of the first women to be force fed under the 1913 'Cat and Mouse Act'. Her autobiography offers a sensationalised account of her role in the suffrage movement. Seller Inventory # 2340
