Large scale map of the Nile running through Sudan, published in the year of the siege of Khartoum (March 1884-January 1885) by the forces of the Mahdi. It includes the report of Major Kitchener, already an experienced Middle Eastern surveyor and fluent Arabic speaker, on the settlements, state of the roads, availability of water, etc. In 1898 Kitchener (later 1st Earl Kitchener of Khartoum), who had sworn to avenge the death of General Gordon at the end of the siege, finally defeated the Mahdist forces at the Battle of Omdurman.
