Colour-printed portrait frontispiece after George Richmond, and 12 colour-printed and 6 monochrome plates, with illustrations after Conrad Martens, John Gould, Philip Gidley King, Phillip Parker King, Robert FitzRoy, et al. printed recto-and-verso. Illustrations, diagrams and plans in the text. Original blue buckram by The Bath Press, upper board and spine blocked in gilt and black after a design by David Eccles, top edges blue, map endpapers reproducing the chart of the Beagle’s track, original slipcase. (Very small mark on top edges, slipcase a little marked and bumped.) A very good, clean copy.

First edition thus with R.D. Keynes’s prefatory material. This edition of the Journal of Researches follows (with minor emendations) the text of the 1860 edition, and is prefaced by an ‘Introduction’, ‘Suggestions for Further Reading’, and ‘Note on Illustrations’ by Darwin’s great-grandson Richard Darwin Keynes CBE, FRS, former Professor of Physiology at Cambridge University and editor of The Beagle Record (Cambridge, 1979) and Charles Darwin’s Zoology Notebooks and Specimen Lists from H.M.S. Beagle (Cambridge, 2000), and author of Fossils, Finches and Fuegians: Charles Darwin’s Adventures and Discoveries on the Beagle, 1832-1836 (London, 2002). This edition of the Journal was reprinted in 2004 and 2006.
