Book Description
Hardback set of seven volumes containing seven novels, with poems including some by Rev Patrick Brontë, plus Mrs Gaskell’s Life of Charlotte Brontë. Half bound in green leather with gilt decoration to the spines with raised bands and a gilt floral device in each compartment. Marbled papers to the boards and as endpapers. Each volume with engraved frontis. Agnes Grey 165pp. Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey in one volume with the preface and memoir of both authors by Charlotte Brontë 462pp. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall: 416pp. Jane Eyre 464pp. The Professor with poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell and the Cottage Poems by Patrick Brontë, 432pp. Shirley: 543pp. Villette, 496pp. Each volume 155 by 100mm (6 by 4 inches). gilt to top edge. Title pages mostly use the Bell pseudonyms, Brontë (and Mrs Gaskell) is used on the spines. Generally a little wear to spine ends and some minor scuffs to leather with some slight colour loss in small areas. Villette has some uneven sunning to face more obvious on the leather than the marbled papers to the boards and Shirley has even slighter sunning to the rear. Some light foxing to the prelims of Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, and there is more pronounced foxing to the title page of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, very light foxing to closed page edges on most volumes, else pages are very clean and crisp. The Professor has a small area of surface damage to front external hinge edge with loss of tiny areas of leather and some slight scuffing to top of raised bands. Leather corners have minor scuffs but are essentially in very good condition. Bindings are tight and square. Very clean. 5 volumes are graded very good; The Professor and Villette are good+. Overall a very good set.
