Baghdad Map

Book Description
[IRAQ] Baghdad Tourist Map, Folio 510 x 440mm, folding to original covers, approx.. 225 x 130mm, some holes at fold intersections and three short tears at the end of three folds. Red ink annotation in the bottom margin: very good copy of a fragile map, Baghdad, pr.Summer Resorts & Tourism Services, nd [c.1970].
Dealer Notes
A vibrant map of Baghdad, capturing sites of historical interest (e.g: Shaikh Abdul Quadir Ai-Gailani Mosque), through embassies of the time (West Germany and U.A.R. etc), through to interests that had a distinctly more European influence (Baghdad Cabaret).
Iraq was rapidly developing throughout the 70’s, financed by successful oil production. Combined with a thawing of relations with its temperamental neighbours, tourism infrastructure projects had been centralised to a development board and were being rapidly built with an aim of increasing annual tourism to 500,000 visitors. However, this driving ambition was immensely hindered by the Iraq- Iran war (1980), leading into the country’s turbulent contemporary history.
