ILLUSTRATIONS OF OXFORD
Book Description
JAMES RYMAN Illustrations of Oxford with Select Views of the Colleges, Halls, and Other Public Edifices, Including the Most Recent Additions and Alterations, with Historical and Descriptive Letterpress. Vol.I. [all published]
Oxford: James Ryman, 1839.
Folio. pp. Engraved frontispiece, title page and dedication; 38 steel engraved plates, each with accompanying letterpress. The title and a couple of plate margins are foxed. Bound in contemporary full red panelled morocco, gilt, with all edges gilt. The upper spine joint repaired. A pleasing copy
The plates are engraved by George Hollis after John Chessall Buckler, T. Hollis and others. They include 29 fine full page views of the city and colleges.
It is a rare work with some uncommon views of the colleges to which celebrated artists like T.S. Boys, Frederick Nash and J.S. Prout made relevant contributions. Inevitably broken for its plates, its scarcity was compounded by the weakness of the publisher’s binding, here restored.
