Book Description
Manilal Mohandas Gandhi [1892-1956] second son of Mohandas Gandhi, editor for many years of Indian Opinion, a newspaper founded by his father, published in Phoenix, Natal, South Africa. The typed airmail letter, signed in blue ink 'Manilal Gandhi' dated 27th November 1954. To Esme Wynne Tyson [1898-1972, actress, friend of Noel Coward and collaborator with the author J D Beresford with whom she shared a strong interest in metaphysics]. The letter expounds his own spiritual outlook on life and his father's legacy, beginning by thanking her for sending him her book 'This Life is Eternal'. I have not the least doubt that man's ultimate goal is to fight for real freedom and that is the freedom of the soul. My father's life long struggle was for that and it was was because he had realised and succeeded in freeing the soul that he succeeded in freeing a great country from the clutches of a great empire. But few people realise that one has to begin with oneself. I see people surrounding me and with whom I have to work - and the best of them slaves to the most trifling things as cigarettes. Can a person who is a slave of that ever dream of becoming a Brahmacharya? And they do not realise too that if we are to fight the forces of materialism we can only do so by mastering the spiritual forces. My father died attempting to teach my people that and yet even they have not learnt the lesson. It is indeed a hard struggle and we are but weaklings depending on the grace of God. Nothing can be achieved without his Grace and we cannot expect to get it without deserving it. It is true the talk of Brahmacharya does not appeal to the western mind . The mysterious power they attributed to my father was nothing but his strict adherence to Brahmacharya and Truth and Ahimsa came in their wake The same is the case today with Vinoba Bhave [1895-1982 an Indian spiritual leader] who has very deservingly worn my father's mantle and has excelled him in his austerity. A few creases to edges else very good condition.
