Book Description

450 p. Manuscript on faintly ruled paper. Page size 195 x 170 mm. Written in black ink in a single legible hand with contemporary numbering. Contemporary half bound in straight grained goatskin with marbled boards. Rubbed and with some loss but the contents are clean and tight. Some entries are attributed to published sources. The contents are miscellaneous but include glues and cements, gilding, sealing wax and wafers, cookery, pickles etc, wine making and brewing, pests, medical receipts, paints and enamels. p. 216 has 'In case of accident by the clothes of females taking fire' p. 292 'Medical qualities of oysters in Fevers.' Dating may be assisted by a suggestion that cancer may be cured by nicotine (nicotine first described in Germany in 1828) and 'Cure of the Cholera Morbus'. The first major outbreak in UK started in Sunderland in late 1831 and reached London in the Spring of 1832. [ 7826 ]
