Book Description

The scarce two volume First Edition officially de-accesioned from the London Islington Library with their Clerkenwell bookplate to each volume and ink stamp throughout. With five of the seven hornbooks called for and a note in the recess of vol 2 from the Borourgh Librarian that... " Two Specimens used for display during the 1947 Children's Book Week were stolen by children." Those missing are The Royal Battledore & an un-covered Hornbook in Black Letter. Both volumes have an engraved tissue guarded frontispiece and hand-coloured title vignettes plus numerous illustrations throughout the text Quarto full vellum with original leather lettering pieces, marbled endpapers with recessed pockets for the samples. The standard work on the subject and the finest production of the Press which Andrew White Tuer founded.
