Dealer Notes
First published in the Delphin series, 1685, and one of very few to have had a serious later revision. Jean Hardouin (1646-1729) has a fuliginous reputation for his paradoxical views: all councils of the Church before Trent were spurious; nearly all ancient classics (Pliny's Natural History being one of the exceptions) were 13th-century forgeries, by monks under the direction of a certain Severus Archontius; the New Testament was written in Latin... (Cf. Momigliano, Contributo I (1955), 67-106). This elaborate edition nevertheless contains much of value, and the third volume, devoted wholly to indexes, is still useful.
