OUR AUGUST ONLINE BOOK FAIR OPENS ON 29TH AT 12 NOON - DROP BY IF YOU CAN!
Book Description
101 pp. Publisher’s original pictorial boards. Minor rubbing to spine ends. Spotting to endpapers and fore-edge. Boards bright. Internally clean. No ownership names. With 24 full-page colour lithographs. Fewer and fewer copies of this fantastic work now come on to the market in good condition. So many have been broken up for the plates, this being the only book of colour illustration that Ravilious published in his lifetime. Only 2000 copies were printed, and the original lithographic plates were destroyed by a bomb during the war, so it wasn’t reprinted by The Curwen Press. Ravilious was an official war artist, and the aircraft that he was a spotter in disappeared while he was stationed in Iceland in 1942. His close friend Edward Bawden was devastated by the loss. Anyone who attended the marvelous Ravilious exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, can't have helped being moved by Bawden's letter to Tirzah Ravilious, just months after his death. There was also a good portrait of Bawden by Ravillious in the exhibition, that showed Bawden painting in his turquoise slippers. A very nice copy.
