A highly decorative booklet that focuses on the rising greatness of the empire under Reza Shah Pahlavi. Abdol Hussein Hamzavi (b.1920 - d.1979) was an Iranian diplomat and representative at the U.N. It provides an interesting look into the mindset and hope for the nation during the interwar period. The book first introduces the reader to Iran with a brief overview of Persian history, with particular focus on the exploits of Darius and Cyrus. However, the authors excitement is more focused about the developments under the Shah from his ten years in power. Particular praise is directed at the improved roads as he notes the new 10.000 miles of magnificent and modern road. (p.32), and eagerly awaiting the Iranian railways opening in 1938, after which you will be able to travel all the way across the country from the Caspian Sea to the Persian-Gulf (p.33). He is equally keen to show the sophistication of his nation with the development for free schools .being opened in provincial towns and villages everywhere (p.52). It s further interesting to note that H.G Wells and Bernard Shaw were the most popular authors within Iran of foreign authors with works that had been translated into Farsi. Whilst it contains a price tag of 5d, the hand-crafted nature of this booklet (hand painted boarders and stuck In lithographic prints), suggests a costly production and a small print run.
