Heligoland as an Ornithological Observatory

Book Description
First English edition, of title originally published in Germany in 1890. HB. Green cloth with gilt title to spine and gilt image of a lighthouse to front cover, no dustjacket as issued. Gilt top page edges. x, 599pp, quarto. With photo of the author as frontispiece, tissue-guarded, plus another b&w photo plate, and some line drawings in text. The first 164 pages have chapters devoted to bird migration studies, which were being pioneered at Heliogland, followed by systematic spceies accounts. This is a classic book that is not often seen. This copy has the bookplate of ecologist and ornithologist Bryan Sage inside front cover. The contents are in very good condition, well bound (though with cracks over internal joints at endpapers) and with generally clean pages; the covers are worn , with abrasions and small tears to the cloth on corners , though the gilt is still bright. Good+ overall.
