John Doyle (1797-1868) went by the pen name HB. Born in Dublin, Initially, he was a painter of equestrian subjects, He moved to London in 1822, and it is for his political caricatures from 1827 onwards that he is best remembered. His work was signed with the initials ‘HB’ (a conjunction of two Is, which are printed like Js, and two Ds, these two letters singly being Doyle's initials). He carefully guarded his anonymity. In 1847 he “outed” himself in a long letter to sir Robert Peel. As the founder of 'the modern school of graphic satirists represented by Richard Doyle, John Leech and John Tenniel' Doyle prepared the way for Punch. Over 900 of his drawings are held in the British Museum.
Thomas Mclean (1788-1875) was a London printseller and publisher who specialised in the publication of political caricatures. He issued hundreds of such cartoons in journals such as the Monthly Sheet of Caricatures.
