Dealer Notes
The bookplates carry the crest of Earl Spencer surmounting a blank space enclosed by leafy drapery in which is added in manuscript the word “Wimbledon”. Winbledon Manor House was built for Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough in 1733, and in 1744 passed to her heir, the 10-year old John Viscount Spencer, soon the be made the 1st Earl Spencer. We assume the bookplate was designed to serve the books at both Wimbledon and Althorp.
The Count of Caylus is very representative of his time; brilliant officer, bon vivant, author of wicked verse, libertine tales and fairy tales, he promoted the arts and artists. Member of the Academy of Fine Arts and that of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres, he also wrote on painting, the arts, archeology and history.
