We can offer a large and entirely unique gesso panel illustrating the Ode on Mercy from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice. Created by D.B. Moginie and dated 1861, this has all the hallmarks of an exhibition piece for one of the many International Arts and Manufacturing Exhibitions of the mid-nineteenth century though we have been unable to pin it down to a particular one. It remains a bit of an enigma; the artist D.B. Moginie appears in none of the standard databases, though he is obviously extremely skilled. The complexity and the detail on this panel is extraordinary.
Panel size is 740 x 490 mm. the frame 1040 x 790 mm. The frame and backing are completely untouched and it is obvious that it has never been removed from the frame. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortuitously, the glass no longer survives. There is some damage to the frame, and one small piece of gesso is missing, perhaps from when the glass was broken.
