8vo, pp. [vi], 898, with 7 folding map and 99 full-page plates (wanting plates 22, 86-86 within numerical sequence), illustrated frontispiece, slight age browning, most plates browned and foxed, occasionally dusty, some light dampstaining to title and following couple of gatherings, first few leaves a bit frayed at margins. Modern buckram. 19th-century dedication to verso of frontispiece.
A later edition of Beeton’s popular geographical dictionary, with maps of the ancient, modern and biblical world, and wood-engraved illustrations. Contemporary advertisements boasted of ‘several hundred engravings’, but it is unlikely they were all ever bound in. That there were variations is proved by plate 14 in this copy, repeated twice but with a different image.
