Book Description

Well printed edition of Charron, popular both in France and England ('Of Wisdom' was a favourite of Charles Lamb), and here present in an attractive binding of the period. Inscribed on the half title of Part I 'To Lord Jeffrey in Memory of Holland House! from his sincere friend E.V. Holland'. Elizabeth Vassall Fox, Lady Holland, was the celebrated chatelaine of Holland House, where she entertained the Whig grandees and literary men for a generation; Lord Jeffrey, eminent lawyer and editor of the Edinburgh Review, was every inch a Whig grandee. With later bookplate of T. Dawson Brodie, and bookseller's ticket (a miniature pile of books) of Kerr and Richardson, Glasgow. An earlier bookplate, perhaps that of Jeffrey, has sometime been removed.
