8vo, 23cm, [xviii],313,[3]p., 16 photograph & 1 line-drawn portrait plates, line-drawn chapter head. Original printed cloth (corners bumped; water mark along lower edge of upper board, spine endcap & few spots to spine), gilt upper cover tilting and printed vignette of a croquet player. Clearly a significant work of its time in which Lillie explores technique and the state of croquet in England with illustrations of current champions including chapters by Locock on croquet openings and others such as “croquet in the provinces” and “Reform to croquet laws.” A fair copy (small loss to blank upper corner of one leaf; light title spotting).
