Book Description

A presentation copy to the British heart surgeon Ben Milstein from the American heart surgeon M. Terry McEnany with his inscription on the fep. - "To Ben Milstein, memories of an old friend, From Terry McEnany, August, 1974." - together with an inserted letter from McEnany to Milstein relating to the gift of the book. Also on fep. is an inscription from the subject of the book(Dr, Denton Cooley): "8.20.87 - To Ben (and Margaret) with sincerest best wishes and affection , Denton". "The dimensions of Dr. Cooley's genius simply overwhelm our ordinary notions of the modern doctor's role. His achievements in open-heart surgery are more than technological marvels - they are intrusions into the no-man's land between life and death, Intrusions breathtaking in their audacity. Harry Minetree has had the imagination to follow and define the doctor's great career, giving full value to the eerie shadow cast by the figure of such a hero of our times."
