Book Description

Adams C2487; Renouard 113-14; Schreiber 176. folio, olive tree device on title, title very slightly dusty but a clean copy, no tears or worming, sewing sound, covers firmly attached on four cords, but the calf (early 18th century?) badly torn and peeling off
Dealer Notes
Only 16th-century edition of this practical handbook for adapting ancient speeches to current occasions. The excerpts from Greek historians do print the Greek text, but in minute type, and for these as well as the Roman historians it must be assumed the modern orator will work from the Latin, usefully indexed by type: deliberativum (suasio, exhortatio...); iudiciale (accusatio, mitigatio...); demonstrativum (laudatio, lamentatio...). It is a valuable work for the study of Renaissance rhetoric, and worth restoring: but too common a book for the restoration to be a commercial speculation.
