8vo. Limited edition. #48 of 100 copies. Original red cloth, lettered on the spine and with ruling and a repeated fleur-de-lys motif in gilt to the front board. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A tipped-in note from the publisher explains, ‘This volume was prepared and mainly printed in 1914. Owing to the War, difficulties of production supervened, and in 1921 it is offered as a companion to the preceding volumes on Choffard and Gravelot.’ A second note is by the author and reveals that Emile Bertaux lost his life during the war and the preface was one of the last things he wrote. The contents include a life of Charles Eisen, an essay on his art, a catalogue of the best-known books illustrated by him and the charming plates.
