Book Description

[Cathay Hotel and later Metropole Hotel and Cathay Mansions, Shanghai]: Luggage labels ( this example , rectangular, with mostly blue and yellow colours) for Cathay Hotels, Shanghai, ca. 1930s, with illustrations of exterior views of the Cathay Hotel, the Cathay Mansions, and the later Metropole Hotel, between two dragons. This example is near fine. The words "Shanghai China" and "Operated By Cathay Hotels Ltd." [not "Operated By Cathay Hotels"] appear on a deeper shade of blue background. The words "The Cathay," "Cathay Mansions," and "The Metropole" are printed in red. The color of the dragons is dark blue, with a deeper shade of light blue scale edges, and with red trim. The claws of the dragons are thicker than other examples. The Cathay Hotel and the later Metropole Hotel both were built for (and were under the control of) Sir Victor Sassoon, and were designed by the Shanghai architectural firm of Palmer & Turner. Cathay Mansions, which also was owned by Sassoon, was designed by the Shanghai architectural firm of Algar & Co., Ltd.
