Book Description

Published by Spottiswoode & Co Ltd, London, 1902, 1st edition. Olive green cloth boards. Gilt lettering and black and white decoration (sundial) to spine. Gilt lettering and pictorial design to front board, no dustwrapper. Teg. 9ins x 6ins, xix, (i), 334pp plus folding map of Eastbourne in 1816, frontis and 17 plates. Also 27 smaller photographs or sketches within the text - as listed. Prelims includes a list of subscribers, which totals 305 copies. There is a handwritten note on this page recording the number of Reverends, J.P's, doctors etc. "Terry Luxon Library, Bulkington, CV12 9RU" stamped to the half title along with a library ticket. Signature of one of the subscribers to top of this page. Extensive notes on when and where the book was bought and when it was read to verso of front free endpaper. Envelope pasted to front pastedown containing some old newspaper clippings about Eastbourne. Scattered foxing to the text. Rubbing to edge of spine and corners but overall this is a G+ nr VG, complete copy of a scarce book.
