FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Red cloth, gilt lettering (dulled). Spine ends bruised and rubbed. Edges and endpapers spotted. POI to ffep, else, clean. In the original dust jacket (based on a woodcut by Hiroshi Yoshida): losses to spine ends, edgewear, tender along joints, fox spotted. Still, the jacket art remains complete, and lovely. Good+/good+.

Hessell Tiltman takes her title from the Japense proverb, “The saddest thing in life is to be born a woman” (Title page). The novel draws on her own time living in post-war Japan. The PEN Hessell-Tiltman Award is awarded annually for a non-fiction book of specifically historical content, funded by a bequeath from the author.
