First edition, limited to 260 copies, this one of 220 cloth-backed copies. Simon Brett (b. 1946) was educated at Ampleforth College and St Martin’s School of Art, where he studied painting and learnt wood-engraving from Clifford Webb. After working as an artist and teacher, Brett moved from painting to wood-engraving in the 1970s, and – as well as both illustrating and publishing books – he has engraved many bookplates and booklabels. The noted historian of bookplates Brian North Lee FSA (1936-2007) published The Ex-Libris of Simon Brett in 1982 – ‘the first [monograph] published on a British bookplate artist for over half a century’ (p. 13) – which recorded the first 52 of the bookplates Brett had designed and cut. Bookplates by Simon Brett is composed of a study of Brett’s bookplates by Lee, followed by a chronological catalogue of the bookplates (which lists 80 designs and brings the earlier catalogue up to date), and it concludes with Brett’s essay ‘The Artist’s Approach’. The book was published in an edition of 260 copies printed in 10pt Spectrum set by Bill Hughes on dampened Zerkall mould-made paper, and this copy is one of 220 bound in quarter cloth and patterned paper designed by Brett.

Although not marked as such, this copy was previously in the collection of the distinguished Lawrence scholar Jeremy Wilson, the editor of T.E. Lawrence’s Minorities (London, 1971), the author of the National Portrait Gallery catalogue T.E. Lawrence: Lawrence of Arabia (London, 1988) and the authoritative biography Lawrence of Arabia: The Authorised Biography of T.E. Lawrence (London, 1989), and the co-founder, with his wife Nicole, of the Castle Hill Press, which has published scholarly fine press editions of works by Lawrence and the definitive series of Lawrence’s letters.
