Book Description
Birrens and its Antiquities with an account of Recent Excavations and their Results, by James Macdonald and James Barbour, reprinted with additions from the Transactions of the Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society, pub. Dumfries 1897. Quarto. Black cartonnage boards with cloth spine. The boards bearing the title 'Birrens and its Antiquities' in red on the front board. The boards rubbed with touches of wear to edges. 70 pages of text, two photographic plates and fold out plans to rear. Very scarce monograph on the Roman Fort of Blatobulgium in Dumfriesshire, the northern terminus of Roman Watling Street. To the front end paper is the bookplate of C[ourtenay] E[dward] Stevens [1905-1976], noted English historian of the Roman period in Britain. The bookplate over the previous signature dated '97 of J P Gibson [I think a local historian in the North of England] Also Steven's signature to end paper dated 1933.
