Book Description
Autograph letter from the German artist Bele Bachem [1916-2005] to the publisher, Tom Maschler incorporating two original pen and ink drawings. In the 30's she was denounced by the Nazis for her work and banned from exhibiting. Post war she was an occasional illustrator to Der Simpl, a satirical magazine published in West Berlin. She went on to have a distinguished career as an artist, theatre and film designer and illustrator, and also designed for the cermaics producer Rosenthal. She was one of the few female artists within the field of Surrealism. The two page letter is German and incorporates two pen and ink drawings hinting at the female-centric eroticism which permeates her work. A native German speaker would have no difficulty reading her handwriting.
